The Days I Knew: Autobiography of Lillie Langtry 1st Edition Doran 1925

Here is our latest auction on Ebay:

The Days I Knew by Lillie Langtry. First edition, published by the George H. Doran Company in 1925.

Lillie Langtry was born as Emilie Charlotte Le Breton and later became known as the Lady de Bathe. She was spent several years as the mistress of the Prince of Wales Edward Albert, who later became King Edward VII. Shortly after the end of the affair, she heeded the advice of friend Oscar Wilde and embarked on a successful acting career. She frequently toured the U.S. and eventually became an American citizen.

The book is full of black and white photos showing why Langtry was considered one of the great beauties of her day.

Condition: The purple hardcover boards are in nice shape for a book that is 85 years old. Some visible scuff marks and fading to lettering along spine. Typical shelf wear, with corners of cover a bit bent and dulled. Book is complete with all pages/boards firmly attached to binding. Two small labels are found on the blank page at the beginning of book, one with an address blacked out using a marker.

Attractive cover design with gilt lettering.

Here's a great one from a hilarious section dubbed "Inebriates":

The following horizontal musings of a loafing tippler deserve to be perpetuated. Hear him wail:

Leaves have their time to fall,
And so likewise have I;
The reason tho's the same - it
Comes of our getting dry
But here's the difference 'twixt leaves and me
I falls 'more harder' and more frequently'

Condition: The cover has come loose from the binding at the front board and is literally "hanging by a thread" to the back board. Some writing inside, including a "Happy New Year" dedication dated 1918. A few dog earned corners, but pages and text remain firmly bound together.

A wonderfully entertaining book that you can spend hours reading and sharing with house guests!
